MRSA Spread via Chinese Adopted Children

Eurosurveillance reports three instances of adoptive families in Norway acquiring MRSA superbug infections from their adopted children. In all three cases, the children were born in Hunan province, China. The isolated MRSA strains did not match others found in Norway. One set of parents are healthcare workers, and are on indefinite leave until their own MRSA infections can be eradicated.

Apparently this MRSA infection route is new to researchers; the report concludes: "Children adopted from high-[MRSA]-prevalence countries should be considered for MRSA screening on arrival, particularly if the new parents are healthcare workers."
