"Doctor Doom" Pianka Calls for Billions to Die By Ebola Virus

Update 04 Apr 2006: Less than two days after I posted this article, discussion of Dr. Pianka's recent utterances can be found filling the talk-radio waves and the blogosphere. There's a thoughtful take on this issue of "eco-sacrifice," courtesy of The American Thinker.

Forrest M. Mims III reports at The Citizen Scientist about hearing the unbelievable at a recent meeting of the Texas Academy of Science: a call by evolutionary ecologist Dr. Eric R. Pianka to reduce the "surplus" human population.

Dr. Pianka thinks the human population needs to be lowered from six billion to two or three billion -- and that HIV is too slow. He prefers the horrendous Ebola virus, or perhaps avian flu.

Read Dr. Mims's report. I hope you'll be as disgusted as I by Dr. Pianka's barbaric ideas.

Just makes you feel REAL good about the future, doesn't it?

I felt better once I realized this was the Swiftboat attack people at work for the Creation Science Institute, and read all the people around the web debunking the story.

Check before you repeat gossip, it may just be character assasination not news you've heard.

This story was bogus.

On the contrary, later news stories showed that the good doctor didn't deny these beliefs at all -- he simply said that he was speaking for shock value. He strongly believes the Earth has too many people on it, and that something should be done to reduce what Ebenezer Scrooge so delicately called "the surplus population."
